Apparently it was created to run as a TV spot, but due to the language, it was turned into a viral ad. It’s great makes me laugh everytime!!!!!!

Directed by Ridley Scott. Got to be one of the best ads ever!
This commercial, designed by the advertising agency Chiat/Day to introduce Apple’s Macintosh computer and directed by Ridley Scott fresh off his science fiction classic Blade Runner, has never run again since that Super Bowl spot. But few commercials have ever been more influential. Advertising Age named it the 1980s’ Commercial of the Decade. You can still see its echoes today in futuristic ads for technology and telecommunications multinationals such as AT&T, MCI, and Intel.

“As a relatively new water brand Drench had to find a way to make an impact,” explained CHI Partners’ executive creative director Ewan Paterson, who wrote the advert.
“By creating something that people would hopefully seek out and pass on to their friends we’re able to achieve that impact.”
During the dazzling dance routine the gyrating bespectacled scientist swigs from a bottle of Drench mineral water then skids on his knees to the tagline ‘Brains perform best when they’re hydrated.’

Biscuit maker Fox’s is to launch a TV campaign fronted by an animated character dubbed a “danda”, a cross between a dog and a panda.
Fox’s came up with the cross-breed using CGI digital technology in order to avoid any legal issues with Fox’s Glacier Mints’ polar bear Peppy.
The TV campaign, the first by ad agency Mother since it won the Fox’s biscuits business late last year, introduces Vinnie the “wise-guy Italian American” panda/dog who extols the virtues of company’s “biscwits” as the “good stuff”.
Vinnie, who has black-and-white colouring like a panda and a face like a dog, has been developed by the animation team at agency MPC, who worked on Disney’s The Chronicles of Narnia.

When you are a large multinational company like Google, the slightest changes in your identity will quickly be noticed. A few week ago, the big capital “G” that was used as a favicon on every google site turned into an ugly lower-case “g”. That tiny event gave birth to tons of reactions on blogs or on twitter (did anyone say buzz?), people obviously didn’t seem to like the new favicon.
A few days ago, Google’s reaction appeared on the Official Google Blog, Marissa Mayer explains that the current favicon is part of an ongoing design process that seems to have been painful (that’s how I translate rigorous and interesting).

This ad made us chuckle while watching BigBrother on Friday night….
Cadbury’s have just launched a £6.2m campaign for Dairy Milk featuring a gorilla playing the drum solo of Phil Collins’ track ‘In the Air Tonight’. The ad was written and directed by Sony Bravia ‘balls’ creative director Juan Cabral of Fallon London. Rather than wet our appeite for gorgeous tasting chocolate, the ad simply aims to entertain.
Laurence Green, planning director of Fallon, “Cadbury traditionally did well-built ads for the interruption age when consumers had an implicit media deal with advertisers. In exchange for free TV they would allow us to interrupt their programmes with commercials,” says Green. “The nation has a massive soft spot for CDM and it is deeply embedded in the national psyche. For a brand that is so well known, it’s arguable whether the old style interruption advertising model is the best model for the future. So we are trying to engage more genuinely with our audience.”
“Chocolate is about joy and pleasure. For years Cadbury has told us that it was generous, through the glass and a half strap line. We thought, don’t tell us how generous you are; show us. Don’t tell us about joy; show us joy.”
Personally, I think the ad works. Some might say the ad’s a risk due to the lack of product or even mention of the C word. Something that makes you smile so effortlessly is contagious. What do you think?

The possibilities are endless!
Slate have posted an excellent article that explores Donald Gunn’s theory that all great advertising used one of 12 formats.
“In 1978, Donald Gunn was a creative director for the advertising agency Leo Burnett. Though his position implied expertise, Gunn felt he was often just throwing darts—relying on inspiration and luck (instead of proven formulas) to make great ads. So, he decided to inject some analytical rigor into the process: He took a yearlong sabbatical, studied the best TV ads he could find, and looked for elemental patterns.”
Example from the sixth format, ‘benefit causes story’. Here we follow a series of events caused by the product’s benefits…
“In this Lynx ad, we see a series of attractive women forgiving a guy’s uncouth behavior. (It’s OK that you’re late, it’s OK that you forgot my birthday, it’s OK that you cheated on me, and so forth.) In the payoff, it’s revealed that the guy has been using Lynx body spray. The product’s benefit—beguiling women to the point of dementia—creates the story.”
View Slade’s interpretation of the 12 formats in their slideshow.
