Gorilla + Phil Collins = Cadbury’s Chocolate

This ad made us chuckle while watching BigBrother on Friday night….

Cadbury’s have just launched a £6.2m campaign for Dairy Milk featuring a gorilla playing the drum solo of Phil Collins’ track ‘In the Air Tonight’. The ad was written and directed by Sony Bravia ‘balls’ creative director Juan Cabral of Fallon London. Rather than wet our appeite for gorgeous tasting chocolate, the ad simply aims to entertain.

Laurence Green, planning director of Fallon, “Cadbury traditionally did well-built ads for the interruption age when consumers had an implicit media deal with advertisers. In exchange for free TV they would allow us to interrupt their programmes with commercials,” says Green. “The nation has a massive soft spot for CDM and it is deeply embedded in the national psyche. For a brand that is so well known, it’s arguable whether the old style interruption advertising model is the best model for the future. So we are trying to engage more genuinely with our audience.”

“Chocolate is about joy and pleasure. For years Cadbury has told us that it was generous, through the glass and a half strap line. We thought, don’t tell us how generous you are; show us. Don’t tell us about joy; show us joy.”

See the ad again in full here: Glass and a Half Full Productions

Personally, I think the ad works. Some might say the ad’s a risk due to the lack of product or even mention of the C word. Something that makes you smile so effortlessly is contagious. What do you think?

my favourite advert, absolutely love it.

  9. on 03 Sep 2007 at 12:40 amD'n

Awesome. Don’t forget, we already have a rich association between Collins and Gorillas — who did the track to “Tarzan”, hmm?

    Well done & a half!

Brilliant, laughed my head off. Such a great ad - well done!!!!

Well done Cadburys - absolutley no link between the Gorilla and the chocholate but does its job - got us talking - I think this gorilla is destined for great stardom - watch out Hollywood.

Small chuckle first time I saw, will be one of those annoying ads that you’ll have to leave the room after the second time you’ve seen it.

Will spawn stupid youtube mockery and not die for ages

    Pile of arse.

Fantastic advert.. Not sure I understand the connection with Cadbury’s but who cares.. Laughed my head off on Friday when I first watched it…

I really enjoyed the advert - thought it was brilliant. Surprised it was for Cadbury but definitely memorable.

  16. on 03 Sep 2007 at 2:14 pmboris

Calm down. It’s brave but it aint’s THAT great. Good for grabbing attention but didn’t make me laugh.

  17. on 03 Sep 2007 at 2:20 pmem22

It’s an excellent advert! Cadburys being so famous they don’t need to make an normal advert telling us how good their delicious choc is.

Instead we get this great 1m30 seconds of brilliance, now for those of you who don’t get it, it’s because your minds are not yet at the mature state to enjoy something a little more sophisticated - the evidence is there by your comments ; “a pile of arse” , “total crap” etc, not very articulate.

The advert i would imagine has worked very well as I have been talking about it with people, which is exactly want they want!

Great stuff, if only all adverts where as cryptic and entertaining!

did anyone else think there was a connection between the advert and brian just winning big brother. had he not said he followed every big brother and has also “been waiting for this moment all his life”. The fact the two stars bear a resemblence is just alittle uncanny.

    Co-incidence or Conspiracy??

By the way i think brian is great so don’t get any silly racist ideas.

I do not as a rule normally leave feed back on websites.
However on this occasion I feel that i should.

    This advert is utterly fantastic.
it does not pander to peoples insecurities and does not pretend to be anything other than an advert, it does not promise to make us look younger, fitter more handsome etc

It says to me that whatever cards you are dealt on this planet we can, at least once, achieve out personal desires.

love it, well done all those involved in it’s making.

great advertisement, no sexual innuendo, no words, no fake family scenario, an advertising benchmark, I’ll expect to see the gorilla at the next Phil Collins concert… Phil… I am available to play bass…..

  24. on 04 Sep 2007 at 12:53 amcheat007

    The best advert in years.

Just purely for the fact that they use a Phil Collins track in an advert. He is a legend!

Now just make some more ads with Genesis tracks in :)

  25. on 04 Sep 2007 at 9:18 amboris

Thanks for enlightening ‘those who don’t get it’ Em 22. For this to be the best advert in years is a sad endictment to advertising - so you may be right. And to be fair people will talk about a guy doing shadow puppetry on Youtube. Doesn’t make it inspired.

I don’t get it, there must have been some reasoning behind using a gorilla, it’s catchy but it doesn’t make me want to go buy Cadbury chocolate.

  29. on 04 Sep 2007 at 6:25 pmmicah

ctsc: you’re mistaking a solo piece of music for a solo within a song (one is written for a single instrument, the other merely features a single instrument).

music nerd nitpicking aside though, i loved the ad. they really nailed what they were going for: an ad that just makes you smile. it’s like those cat videos on youtube that you absolutely can’t help but smile at. hell, you could advertise anything with a cat being wacky and it’d be an instant win.

I was sitting at home watchindg dumped and a house mate said oh f* me this ad is an absolute classic.
Im watching the build up thinking this gorilla breathing , thinking what the f*..huh.. this aint gonna be funny, is this some sort of air freshner ad or add for mintees, and when the gorilla cracks his neck and gets relaxed and then drums out the beat to the phil collins track , after the build up, i laughed my eyes out.
One of the best ads ever produced,!

I live in Oz and my niece told me to check this ad out ……I haven’t laughed so much in ages. Being a huge Phil Collins fan there was a split second before it happened that I realised what the Gorilla was going to do …..didn’t spoil it in the least. Now I’ve got half of Adelaide and Sydney come to that matter checking it out.

Well done …..totally awesome and nothing smutty about it. Great way to start my day.

  38. on 06 Sep 2007 at 3:33 pmchris

as far as selling chocolate i think it was a waste of £6.2million as i dont think it will make people get up and buy cadbury’s chocolate. however i pi**ed my laughing when i saw, its a hillarious and brilliant advert, i’ve never seen anything like it. well done cadbury’s and the producer!!!!!!

  39. on 06 Sep 2007 at 8:12 pmAnonymous

Stunning ad; a real 3 in the morning idea.
I can see it all now; sitting around a desk in the ad agency: “OK, any ideas for the CDM campaign”, long pause, sound of someone toking on a weapons grade spliff, slightly shorter pause, and then through a set of clenched teeth that don’t want to let any air out…”Yeah man, how about a Gorilla playing the drums”.

One question though; who is the drummer in the ad?

brill add my kids want it as a ringtone on there phones gets everyone talking about chocolate

  41. on 07 Sep 2007 at 3:19 pmSharpsthename

To say “it wont make me go out and buy Cadbury’s chocolate” is a trifle crass in my opinion, and hints at a rather one-dimensional mind. No advertisement I ever saw..EVER .. has made me go out and buy something. But almost every ad I see raises or lowers my opinion of of a company or it’s brand: for instance the Renault ads in the 90’s featuring an Italian priest scuttling around in a swishing robe makes me think: ‘I hate Renault for foisting this sh*t upon me’ while the latest Skoda ad of a car made from cake ingredients makes me love the company for its superb imagination.
The Ape ad from Cadburys doesnt make me laugh in the least, in fact quite the opposite: it makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck for its pure cleverness, attention to detail, choice of the Collins track, the Apes expressions and head movements and so on….dont be thick and look at whats directly in front of you: look at all the thought that went into it for God’s sake. Cadbuys deserve a medal for daring to do this. I love it. Even though I can agree to a degree with the guy who says he’ll hate it when he’s viewed it more than twice!! Final word though: BRILLIANT

  42. on 07 Sep 2007 at 5:45 pmCosmo

Personally I was never a fan of Phil Collins but appreciated his music and drumming skills were quality, who remembers him jet setting for Live Aid on Concorde to play at both venues? Perhaps he is in the gorilla suit, who knows? But all in all, this ad is very moving and really makes me smile, and it keeps popping into my head! Just want to see it again! And can’t wait for the follow ups…

Is there a hidden message? If there is i’m not intelectual enough to spot it! What I can see is that it has a lot of people talking about it, and wether or not it makes you go out and buy some Cadbury’s chocolate it has had the (probably) desired effect - it has raised peoples awareness of Cadbury’s. Oh - am I wrong? Well just ask yourselves this —- “How many times in the last 5 - 10 - or even 15 years have YOU said the word “CADBURY’S” “?

hi all, as a company owner myself marketing for me is about choosing how you want your company to be viewed by those whom you mean to attract as clients, not to directly sell your product. most consumers today are far too clever for traditional ‘call to action’ sales ads of old.

As for this ad, i think it is pure marketing genius. It wont directly sell more choc, but it lifts the general opinion of cadburys and is a massive depature for them from thier traditional sex, choc, ads.

As for me, i wish i was in the possition to spend that kind of cash on an ad, if i was, and my marketing team came to me with an ad that was half as good as this i would be 1 happy guy!

excellent ad, tastfully done… nailed it!

  63. on 15 Sep 2007 at 11:43 amJeff

In this age of grand illusion, world dramas, ever increasing interest rate and fuel increases together with world commodity and human rights issues, what better way to bring some humor and normality into our otherwise tumultuous lives.

Phil collins for those who dont know, is a music legend of our times, he was here when I was much younger and is still around today albeit deaf in one ear ( for the moment )

Cadbury has been around even longer and YEAH, I can relate to a spliff at 3 am.

Cadbury, all I want to say is ” CHOICE ONE “

  64. on 15 Sep 2007 at 6:06 pmMike

I love this advert, just pure entertainment and so cool!

I have been going on about it all week to my wife and kids

I thought this was a brilliant ad and when you’re a chocaholic you can relate to the joy the gorilla is experiencing in the music. He even smells the music in the way you would chocolate. I can only say those who didn’t enjoy the add don’t really know about real pleasure.

  70. on 17 Sep 2007 at 8:44 pmEllen

Pure brilliance; good call Cadbury listening to the creative team behind this one. How will this sell chocoloate/enhance the brand? Look at the art direction: purple backdrop, dark brown/black colours in gorilla, silver drumkit = subtle subconscious nudge to buy Cadbury’s chocolate as purple is their brand colour and the silver and dark brown represents chocolate in a wrapper. Ad content represents sheer ‘joy’ reflected by gorillas body language and actions, target audience probably 30-somethings now with children who will be viewed by Cadbury as next generation Dairy Milk consumers hence why this Phil Collins track used (and the great drumming of course). Sorry, ex-suit who can’t resist unpicking the creative rationale on this one! This ad makes me go back to agency!!

Excellent, great ad, its the talk of the office and even in the pub.
Dont watch BB so do not get the suggested connection, think CDM is a far too much bigger than BB to pay mega bucks for throway comments from some no-mark on a soon- to-be taken-off-the-air show!

Absolutely brill advert. I don’t usually watch the ads, they really annoy me,but I was watching the footy on sky in a bar,Liverpool of course! this ad came on playing a phil collins tune, I immediately looked up, being a fan of his,and I just had to watch it to the end, gets you talking anyway”Have you seen the gorilla advert for cadburys”Pure genius, but who is the gorilla?that’s on everyone minds now. Don’t know if it will encourage people to buy Cadburys, but I’m sure Phil’s record sales will rise!

  78. on 30 Sep 2007 at 3:11 amNick

Absolutely fantastic advert and anyone who says otherwise is clearly not an interesting person. This advert is simply the best i have ‘ever’ seen to date, such an amazing track and absolutely mind-boggling - i must say though, when i first seen it i was utter gobsmacked it was from Cadbury’s.

Just an amazing track, amazing video and overall it just screams “wow”.

Great job, thanks a lot to whoever came up with this idea.

Wow…. my clients tell me I’m BRILLIANT when I charge them $6.2M or more, and the ad generates $50M in new sales from people they have never done business with before. No wonder you UK boys continue to lose market share.

So the best I can give this piece is, entertaining, and offer to fire the dumbass who dropped $6.2 clams to feed their creative ego. Sorry to burst your bubble gang, the gig is about selling chocolate bars, and I just don’t believe this piece will do that.

Juan, you’re a flop, and the Emperor has no Clothes. You wasted your clients money.

There I said it. webwildcatting dotus commus if you want to rip my face off, or hire us directly. You better be damn tough if you want to rip our faces off, and want to spend alot less than $6.2 million for a guy in a monkey suit.

    One more quip….

Phil Collins is laughin’ all the way to the bank. What a coup!

His TEAM is brilliant. I bet he didn’t drop a cent, AND gets royalty cash for it every time it plays. Did you notice the next You Tube piece to play is one of him, and not Cadbury? Can you say back-fire?

That guy in the monkey suit is Phil’s banker takin’ in the scent of money!

Good job Team Collins! Stealth at it’s best!

the advert is great i just keep thinking how funny it would be if it was phil collins undernearth that suit!it is a great advert that has got people to talk, i mean it only shows the cadbury logo for about 2 seconds, but all of us know who the adverts by, you know its done its job without aggrevating us like most adverts these days its just a fun advert but not quite as good as the BT buissness one with gordon ramsay thats the best ad ever

    Hi
put it as a download please????please?????please???? as i would use it as a creensaver, top advert (so what if there is a meaning or not) , its about time we had something fun on tv.
Me and the misses sat down and watched the advert over and over again just to see all the movements of (phil) the gorilla.
    absolutly ace.

Advert par excellence. My kids and I love it to death… and the kids love chocolate, so let pester-power prevail. Cadbury’s knew what they were doing. They were courageous to drop the cash on such a concept that appeals to different people of different ages. As for ‘dblaine’. Siddown and shut up. When the fox fails to get the grapes, it says they were sour.

Best advert I’ve seen in years. Thought the advertising agencies had forgotten how to do them.

Love this advert !!!!! I think that the follow up ad should have the same gorilla playing in the same suit and then removing his head to reveal the real Phil collins underneath, Phil should then pick up and eat some Cabury’s choc and wink at the camera.

I think that would be funny

  108. on 11 Nov 2007 at 3:14 pmBill

Adsolutely brilliant. Didn’t want it to end.

    I’m just wondering….

Is Cadbury actually SELLING any more chocolate bars as a result of this ad?

I see many people complimenting the creativity of the ad, but I can’t see that the ’share’ value has risen as a result of this advert…. hmmm….

Neither of my kids have come home screaming for a Cad bar of late, if ever. There’s been no tie in with my local grocers here in the States…

If you Brits are off pounding each others shoulders silly with ‘Jolly goods’ and “Wicked That” and whatever …. for this spot, honestly, I have lake front land in Cleveland with a view for you….

We continue to suggest we could have done a better job for the Lads, Lasses, and Stake holders at Cad for their $6.2 Million. Further, I bet if we dub out Phil, and dubbed in here we’d get just as many people chiming in call ‘Buddy Rich’ in a monkey suit brilliant too…

Again, nothing against Phil. He’s the brilliant one here and so is his marketing team.

For the stakeholders at Cads, come to us when you want to make real money, and not feel like you’ve been made a monkey.

    I’m in advertising, I create adverts for a living…

I spend time thinking up these kind of things, but there is a huge difference between a great ad and a great ad that sells sh!t (nothing)…

This advert has great entertainment value, but I don’t think it will do the brand much good…

10 years from now it will be a case of… “Do you remember that gorilla ad?” not… “Do you remember that cadbury ad…

It is great for Youtube and ring tones, but crap for sales…

I want to see where they take this concept, will they make a whole string of pointless gorilla adverts or will they go in a different direction like trucks belting down a runway for no apparent reason…

This is the result of too many people smoking weed after 3am in the morning and not enough concentration on how to make relevance (logic) and creativity come together to make great advertising that sells…

The creative on this job have just shot themselves in the creative foot…

    Dumb asses!

You deserve a public execution by firing squad…
