1984 Apple’s Macintosh commercial

Directed by Ridley Scott. Got to be one of the best ads ever!

This commercial, designed by the advertising agency Chiat/Day to introduce Apple’s Macintosh computer and directed by Ridley Scott fresh off his science fiction classic Blade Runner, has never run again since that Super Bowl spot. But few commercials have ever been more influential. Advertising Age named it the 1980s’ Commercial of the Decade. You can still see its echoes today in futuristic ads for technology and telecommunications multinationals such as AT&T, MCI, and Intel.

Brains stars in new Drench Ad

The minds behind the latest must-see advert - Thunderbirds’ genius Brains grooving to 90s euro-dance hit ‘Rythym is a dancer’ - are pulling the consumer puppet-strings again as the ninety second video is posted all over the net for millions to see.

“As a relatively new water brand Drench had to find a way to make an impact,” explained CHI Partners’ executive creative director Ewan Paterson, who wrote the advert.

“By creating something that people would hopefully seek out and pass on to their friends we’re able to achieve that impact.”

During the dazzling dance routine the gyrating bespectacled scientist swigs from a bottle of Drench mineral water then skids on his knees to the tagline ‘Brains perform best when they’re hydrated.’

Missold payment protection insurance (ppi)

Following on from the bank charges scandal (which I think most people would have heard about by now), there is another consumer rebellion in the finance industry that I’ve noticed; mis-sold PPI reclaims. It seems a number of firms have been mis-selling the payment protection insurance (PPI) which is used to cover loans. The Citizens Advice Bureau noticed this some years ago, and published information on their concerns. It’s taken a while but now the Financial Service Authority have looked into it and concurred with the Citizens Advice Bureau, seeting out a number of fines. This has prompted people to start reclaiming their mis-sold PPI from the companies responsible. Many industry analysts believe this mis-selling could be quite widespread and that, potentially, millions of people could have a valid claim.

Fox’s biscuits launches ‘danda’ TV ad

Biscuit maker Fox’s is to launch a TV campaign fronted by an animated character dubbed a “danda”, a cross between a dog and a panda.

Fox’s came up with the cross-breed using CGI digital technology in order to avoid any legal issues with Fox’s Glacier Mints’ polar bear Peppy.

The TV campaign, the first by ad agency Mother since it won the Fox’s biscuits business late last year, introduces Vinnie the “wise-guy Italian American” panda/dog who extols the virtues of company’s “biscwits” as the “good stuff”.

Vinnie, who has black-and-white colouring like a panda and a face like a dog, has been developed by the animation team at agency MPC, who worked on Disney’s The Chronicles of Narnia.
